The Hohnhorstsee in the north of Lehrter owes its existence to the construction of the autobahn in the 1930s. In the 1950s, the water level was significantly higher than it is today, so that the lake, which is still privately owned, was a popular bathing area. Nowadays there is less bathing, but there is a pedal and rowing boat rental at the restaurant on the north bank.
In the past, the lake was often frozen over in winter, so you could walk or ice-skate on it. With the temperatures getting warmer and warmer, this will probably become more and more unlikely in the future. The last ice cream fun was in 2012.
