The Edendorfer Tonkuhle in the Edendorf district of Itzehoe is a residual open pit lake. Since there are several clay pits in Edendorf, it is also referred to as the large Edendorfer clay pit to distinguish it from the smaller ones.

After clay was quarried at the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th century, the pit filled with water and was later turned into a green area. [1] Today the water is also used as fishing water.

In 1897, the Breitenburg Portland cement factory in Lägerdorf acquired the site of today's Tonkuhle in Edendorf. The former clay mining area is a still water with a bank and serves as a green area, rain retention basin and for fishing use by the SAV Itzehoe, which is the leaseholder of this water. Roads and settlements border the green area with cycle paths and footpaths.

The Edendorfer Tonkuhle is of regional ecological importance due to its biodiversity and size. But tread damage from feeding ducks and playing children endanger plants and animals in the bank area. Wild geese can also be found here at regular intervals. The water is completely surrounded by a circular hiking trail.
According to a stipulation by the city of Itzehoe, jetties for anglers had to be built so that the shore zone is not so heavily polluted. The two islands in the north-western area are characteristic of this body of water.

The following can be said about fishing:
Only people who belong to the SAV Itzehoe or who have a valid guest card can fish there. Access to the water is generally possible from Schenefelder Chaussee. You can catch eels, tench, pike, carp, perch, pikeperch, occasional catfish and a range of white fish. As a specialty, crayfish can also be found here and there. It should be noted that fishing in this body of water is only permitted from the jetties or designated areas.
