If there hadn't been a sign on the street that indicated the hospital church, I would have passed by. It was just starting to rain lightly. So I hoped for an open church door. In the middle of the city, from Friedrichstrasse, a small alley leads to the chapel which is connected to the hospital. Equal parts of utility building and chapel. In the gable there is a newer statue of Barbara in a niche. Saint Barbara is the patroness of the miners but also the patroness of the dying and has always been the patroness of this chapel. The bell tower above and the altar in the church are still from the chapel built in 1452, which was then renewed in 1781.
The chapel door was open. So I stay in this quiet and venerable room. A prayer text is placed on the small table in front of the altar. It applies to the worries and needs in the Corona time. The large altarpiece shows Saint Barbara with a sword and palm branch. An angel hands her holy bread. The tower can also be seen, which should not be missing from images of the saints. To the right and left of the altar are the two city patrons, Bartholomäus and Martin.
The early Baroque Madonna in the flower dress on the wall to the right of the altar is particularly beautiful. Mother and child wear heavy gold crowns. In the past, the figure also wore a cloth dress. The large crystal chandelier from 1979 tastefully complements all of these treasures.
The hospital church is still used to celebrate weekday church services.
