The mighty rocky peak rises practically in the middle of the Talfer Gorge in the first part of the Sarntal Valley. Today, the small Gothic St. John's Chapel stands on it, giving the Johanniskogel, or Johanneskogel, its name.
It likely stands on the site of a former castle chapel, of which nothing remains. Only a few remains of the old castle itself remain.
The settlement's history, however, goes back much further: significant finds dating back to the Neolithic period, i.e., the 4th to 3rd millennium BC, have even been discovered here.

The small church can also be visited, but it is necessary to borrow a key in advance from the Steinmannhof Inn. From there, a short but challenging walkway, with steps partially carved into the stone, leads up to the summit.
