    "... In the Düssel Valley, not far from the Winkelsmühle mill, an old lime kiln stands along the hiking trail that leads along the Düssel River towards Gruiten. At first glance, it appears to be a semi-derelict industrial monument. This is intentional. For it was precisely on this spot that a lime kiln once stood, likely built long before 1633. It operated for several centuries, fell into disuse in the 1930s, and then remained almost entirely hidden for many years on the hillside beneath earth and leaves – until it was lovingly partially reconstructed between 1984 and 1986. Strictly speaking, the lime kiln has stood here on the banks of the Düssel for at least 370 years (if one generously includes the 50 "invisible" years)...."

        First documented in 1672, it remained in good condition until the 1920s. Behind the lime kiln lies the quarry—now wooded—from which the limestone was extracted.

        In the lime kiln, limestone is heated to a temperature of 900°C to 1200°C, releasing carbon dioxide and producing quicklime. When mixed with water, this becomes slaked lime. This is used for whitewashing walls and also for binding mortar. Upon exposure to air, the lime hardens again by absorbing carbon dioxide—returning to its original state as limestone.
