The pilgrimage basilica St. Georg in Walldürn was built between 1698 and 1728. The stately church is the largest Eucharistic pilgrimage site in Germany. In 1962, Pope John XXIII appointed the church to the minor basilica. The origin of the pilgrimage in Walldürn is the blood miracle of Walldürn. This impressive baroque church is considered the largest pilgrimage church in southern Germany and is famous for the Miracle of the Holy Blood. The pilgrimage basilica of St. George in Walldürn is an important Catholic church and a center of Eucharistic worship in Germany. It was built between 1698 and 1728 in the Baroque style and elevated to a minor basilica by Pope John XXIII in 1962.
According to legend, a so-called "miracle of the blood" occurred in Walldürn in 1330, resulting in a corporal (linen shroud) bearing the image of the Crucified Christ.
