The Steenbergse forests form a beautiful mixed hilly landscape of forests, meadows, fields, small landscape elements, source streams and seepage areas. The varied subsoil of the Steenbergse forests, with more than 26 different soil types, ensures that many different plant species find a home. What makes the Steenbergse forests so special are the numerous sources and seepage zones that bring up lime or iron from the soil, so that you can also find seepage species such as single berry, giant horsetail and marsh marigold. The many spring waters come together in the Karnemelkbeek and the Erwetegembeek. The small spring streams that carry the seepage and spring water to the larger streams are ideal habitats for all kinds of aquatic animals due to their superior water quality. Larvae of damselflies, stone flies and mayflies need very pure water and are therefore still en masse in the Steenberg forests. These larvae are the food of a special fish, the Bullhead, which lives in the larger streams.

The slow roads, beautiful nature...
The only downside in Sint-Goriks-Oudenhove is a lot of mud... but yes, it is winter, and with good walking shoes and some flexibility it is still doable.

Very beautiful. Exceptionally enjoyed as a passage of a marked route. Muddy in some places which is obvious, but it is slippery mud, even in places where you think you can go through it with a careful firm step.
