In the Middle Ages, Zichem was located on the border that separated the Duchy of Brabant from the County of Loon. To protect this dividing line, a border tower was built on the bank of the Demer. At the base of the tower, the walls are more than four meters thick. This giant was not just a noble status symbol, but a real castle tower.
The Maiden's Tower became a protected monument in 1962, but the ravages of time had wreaked havoc. In 2006, the building's old age took its toll; some of it collapsed.

After the necessary stability works to prevent further danger of collapse, investigations followed with a view to preserving the monument. The Maiden's Tower was in a very bad condition, but the original building materials limited the possibilities. The starting point for the restoration was protection of the authentic part and accessibility.

The medieval walls were coated as protection against wind and weather. A modern facade replaces the collapsed part and strengthens the whole. This addition includes the stairs to the viewing platform on top of the tower. The restoration process was difficult, as the location of the monument makes it difficult to reach for heavy or large transports.
