    Remnants of the Atlantic Wall from World War II can still be found along the West Jutland coast. Certainly the numerous bunkers that still exist are not the reason for a holiday on the Danish North Sea coast, but a visit and an associated trip into the past are still worthwhile.

    The many bunkers were part of the coastal defenses against a possible British invasion, stretching from the North Cape to the Pyrenees. At Blåvand was the large Tirpitz position. Two huge gun bunkers which, together with the anti-aircraft battery in Hanstholm, were planned to be Denmark's largest coastal battery. The bunker system was supposed to be put into operation in September 1945, but the capitulation of the German Wehrmacht prevented completion.

    Together with positions on the Wadden Sea island of Fanø, it was intended to secure the entrance to Esbjerg, a strategic hub of the German occupying power. After the war, the bunkers were cordoned off and used by the Danish army for experimental purposes. The southern bunker was excavated and turned into a museum in 1991. The relics of the Atlantic Wall are still present.

    On the occasion of the 50th anniversary of Denmark's liberation, mule sculptures were created from some bunkers on the beach at Blåvand, between Skippervej and Lille Strandvej, by the English artist Bill Woodrow. He mounted large metal mule heads and tails on four of the beachfront bunkers. These sculptures are often confused with stylized horses. However, the artist deliberately depicted mules. The view towards the open sea symbolizes the departure of the disaster that the war has brought to the people of Denmark. How appropriate is the name "Riding into the sea". Especially at high tide, the sculptures are an extremely popular photo motif.
    Mules are considered to be particularly efficient and sure-footed. However, they are sterile and cannot reproduce. So they stand on the beach at Blåvand as a memorial to the wish that the bunkers should never multiply either!
    From the lighthouse Blåvand Fyr you can take very nice photos of the sculptures in good weather and with a wonderful view.
