    Groynes - a piece of cultural history
    Every visitor has probably wondered what the wooden stakes that jut out of the sand and sea on the Baltic coast are all about. 70 percent of the Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania coast is constantly being eroded - by wind, swell, currents, different water levels and changing sea heights. For these reasons, groynes have been built in rows of solid wooden piles since the first half of the 19th century. They extend up to 80 meters into the Baltic Sea, are sometimes rammed 6 meters deep into the sand and run at a distance of approx. 60 meters from one another across the shoreline. With the groyne root, the groyne is integrated into the bank, the water-side end is the groyne head. In Kühlungsborn, the well-preserved groynes extend from the Hansa-Haus (Kühlungsborn West) to the boat harbor (Kühlungsborn East)
