The spiral staircase leads up 102 steps to the viewing platform. Construction of the tower began in 1841. The stones used to build the tower come from the Feldromer Steinkuhle. The sand needed for construction was obtained from the Externsteine area. The coat of arms of the Princes of Lippe can be seen above the portal.
