      The spa facilities of Gesundbrunnen, the former Hofgeismar spa, go back to a discovery made by a wounded soldier in the Thirty Years' War. He discovered the healing effects of the Sülteborn spring. In 1701, Landgrave Karl wanted to implement the experiences he had gained in Bad Pyrmont and had the Karlsbad built. The healing water was piped directly from the spring into the spa. His successors then expanded the spa facilities. With the abolition of the County of Hesse-Kassel in 1866, spa operations also ended. The bathhouses are now used by the Evangelical Academy and serve as a retirement home and for training purposes.

      The old spa houses are very well maintained and the spa park is ideal for a lovely stroll. There is a very nice café in the spa park, which is run by volunteers. The cakes here sell out pretty early. It is best to be there as soon as they open.
