The Valley of the Kings was a necropolis in ancient Egypt where 63 tombs and pits have been found to date. For a long time, the Egyptians buried their pharaohs in the pyramids. But often grave robbers plundered the precious treasures and grave goods. Amenhotep I was the first pharaoh who wanted his tomb to be better protected. For this reason he chose a place that was difficult to access and this was the Valley of the Kings opposite the capital Thebes on the left bank of the Nile. Today, in the Valley of the Kings, we find in particular the tombs of the rulers of the New Kingdom (ca. 1552 BC to 1069 BC, 18th to 20th Dynasty). The valley is in West Thebes, opposite Karnak, on the edge of the desert and surrounded by high mountains. It was probably hoped that the sheltered location would deter grave robbers and looters.
Over the course of 500 years, 60 pharaohs and important dignitaries have been buried in the Valley of the Kings.
