"St. Victor's Church is a donation from the Cappenberger matron Reinmod, who donated the Schwerte farm to the Viktor monastery in Xanten in 1032. St. Viktor was built as a subsidiary church of the monastery in 1050. About a hundred years later, the construction of the The nave, the oldest surviving part of the construction, was converted into a Romanesque basilica in the 13th century.
Schwerte reached prosperity as a Hanseatic city in the 15th century and St. Viktor was expanded to a three-aisled Gothic hall church. In addition, one built the superior church tower, which today is a recognizable "slate tower" a trademark sword.
After the Reformation, St. Victor became a Lutheran church.
The heart of the church is the Antwerp Retable, also known as the Golden Altar, created by painters and sculptors of the Antwerp Luke Guild. The retable was erected at Easter 1523. Admitted is a relic of St. Victor.

The predecessor altar, the seven-painter altar from 1518, is no longer completely preserved. He is one of the few known altars created by a Westphalian master. A predella from this altar with the apostle figures was taken over in the Antwerp carved altar.

Walled in until 1943, a fresco of the Crucifixion survives, also by a Westphalian master, who shows Jesus together with Mary and the disciple John. It dates from the year 1310.
Today, the west tower carries a three-part iron casting of the foundry Ulrich & Weule from the year 1920, tuned to the notes cis', e 'and g'. The bells are named "peace", "justice" and "joy".
