The name "Tjenne" refers to a certain Johanna Machiels from Helshoven, who was accused of witchcraft in 1665 and sentenced to death in 1667 after a two-year trial. Her sentence was announced at the foot of a huge linden tree at a crossroads of the four municipalities of Helshoven, Gotem, Mettekoven and Voort.
Johanna Machiels was burned at the stake a few hundred meters away, on the highest point of the hill.

The Tjenneboom is a monumental tree on the main road from Tongeren to Tienen. The tree is located between Voort and Helshoven, near Mettekoven, on the border of four municipalities: Voort, Mettekoven, Gotem and Hoepertingen. Near the tree is also the monument for Tjenne. The tree is located on a hill of 92 meters high: the highest point in this area, nowadays called Tjenneheuvel.

Originally there was an old lime tree here. Under this tree Johanna Machiels, nicknamed Tjenne, was sentenced to the stake in 1667, for alleged witchcraft, after a trial of two years. She was accused of evil deeds and saw in her the personification of dark powers. The sentence was carried out at this location.

At a crossroads of country roads, at the highest point (92 metres) in the area, a stainless steel memorial monument has been erected for Johanna Michiels, 'Tjenne' in common parlance.
