The Altes Land Museum has been located in the building at Westerjork 49 since 1990.

The house is a typical example of the Altländer Fachhallenhaus (traditional half-timbered house), measuring 35 m long, 17 m wide, and 12 m high. The museum presents the development of the Altes Land and the lives of its inhabitants on an exhibition area of 320 m².

The house's eventful history began more than 280 years ago when it was still located at the end of the village. The former farm encompassed more than 25 acres.

But its owner ran into financial difficulties, and in 1821, bankruptcy proceedings were initiated against the farm, and the farm was sold into 19 parcels.

Thus, a farm story that began in Westerjork in 1524 came to an end.

Johann Mählmann acquired the building, completely demolished the house, which had been destroyed by a storm, and rebuilt it in 1825 on the foundations of the house at Westerjork 49.
The gable remained almost completely intact, and the ground floor was remodeled to meet the needs of its residents.
After 1978, the house was no longer inhabited and fell into disrepair.
In 1983, the fire department even had to demolish the rear section of the hall.

Once again, the house was a ruin.

The house was discovered by local children as a spooky playground,
because the house had long been considered a haunted house.

The Altländer Sparkasse (Sparkasse) acquired the ruins from the municipality of Jork for a symbolic 1 DM
and, together with the municipality, developed a utilization concept that made it possible to utilize public funding.

Since 1990, the house has served as a museum of Altländer history. The converted attic is used for exhibitions, concerts, and other events.
Next to the museum stands a drive-through barn, which was rebuilt in 2001, and today the ensemble once again includes a complete farmstead with a house, barn, and an Altländer gate.
The drive-through barn shares a similar fate to the main building.
Its original location was in Huttfleth, in the neighboring community of Steinkirchen. The barn was built in 1590 and is the oldest surviving outbuilding in the Altes Land region.

The development of the Altes Land and the lives of its inhabitants were and are shaped by the constant confrontation with water. This gave rise to techniques for coping with everyday life, which are shown in the Altes Land Museum. And when mechanization reached the Altes Land at the end of the 19th century, a rapid change began. This is evidenced by numerous machines, the Jork fire brigade, the bus lines, the steam ferry to Hamburg and the Jork power station. Carefully prepared didactically and methodically, visitors are given insights into life and work in the Altes Land on an exhibition area of 320 square meters in the main building.

Here we address the reclaiming of land, the fight against storm surges, fruit growing, and future prospects. The exhibition also provides an introduction to the "Hollerweg" (Holly Path) in the Altes Land region and, as one of the "time windows," also serves as the starting point of the "Hollerweg" (Holly Path).

Original exhibits such as the large water snail and the Borstel diorama, three audio stations, interactive exhibition elements, two media terminals, and appropriate ambient sound convey the exhibition's content.

Beautiful Altes Land Museum in Jork.

This is what defines the Altes Land:

Fruit growing and shipping. The proximity to the Elbe River and the metropolis of Hamburg has shaped the Altes Land for centuries. Whether in spring during cherry blossom season or in summer and autumn during harvest time, visitors can discover a wealth of attractions here. Above all, the enchanting landscape, as well as cultural events and its sights, from the lighthouse to the Arp Schnitger organ.

The Altes Land is a wonderful and unique region. It stretches from the outskirts of Hamburg for over 30 km south of the Elbe to the Hanseatic city of Stade. The area encompasses the entire municipality of Jork, the collective municipality of Lühe, and the Neu Wulmstorf district of Rübke in Lower Saxony, as well as the Hamburg districts of Neuenfelde, C.ranz, and Francop. The Elbe's tributaries—the Schwinge, the Lühe, and the Este—divide the Altes Land into three sections: the first, second, and third mile from west to east.
