      The Late Gothic building was built in 1484 after the heavy city fire. In 1860, citizens of the city founded an association for the collection of historical objects of mining and urban history. In 1903 the club moved into the building.

        The museum, founded in 1861 by the Freiberg Antiquities Association, is one of the oldest civic museums in Saxony and today presents its top-class collections in the most beautiful late-Gothic secular building in the city of Freiberg, the former canon court. The exhibitions with masterpieces of mining art and late Gothic sacred art from Upper Saxony are unique. The combination of representative late Gothic architecture with artistic vaults and the precious art objects gives the visitor a special impression of the history of the mountain town of Freiberg. The highlights of the museum include paintings by Lucas Cranach the Younger, the oldest flying buttress in the world, unique goldsmithing and the oldest mining carvings in Saxony.
