The monastery was founded in the tenth century. It is by far the oldest women's pen in the former principality of Lüneburg.

In 1482, large parts burned down. Parts of the brickwork and the stained-glass windows of the chapel date back to the late gothic reconstruction.
From 1528, the Lutheran Confession began to convert to Lutheranism. In 1699 the Guelph Duke Georg Wilhelm decreed that all places in the monastery should be reserved for noble ladies. In the Thirty Years' War, the monastery was looted by Tilly's soldiers. From 1700, the dilapidated monastery buildings were demolished and replaced by new buildings on the original foundations.

The eventful history made sure that many art treasures and the old buildings were destroyed, so that today mainly buildings from the 18th century can be seen.

In the middle of the small heathland town of Walsrode, the Walsrode monastery rests as a place of ancient traditions. The convent founded by Count Wale and his wife Odelinth in 986 AD is the oldest of the six monasteries in the Lüneburg Heath. Here you can experience monastery architecture worth seeing, ancient art treasures and a relaxing silence. Many visitors feel the special atmosphere as a sense of security.

A wrought-iron gate leads to the baroque and medieval parts of the monastery. Most of the buildings in the harmonious complex date from the period 1720 to 1780. The monastery chapel with its original stained glass windows from 1483 is much older.

Valuable historical objects can be seen in the Walsrode monastery. The life-size wooden donor figure of Count Wale from 1482 is particularly impressive. The wooden Christ Child, which is over 500 years old, is also fascinating. It wears a magnificent robe studded with heather river pearls.
