In addition to the castles that mainly arose from 15th - 16th century (or older) upper court yard configurations, we see the emergence of new castle domains in the 19th century, often without a historical site having preceded it.

During the 19th century, this type of castle domain was widely spread over the territory of Beernem, Oedelem and St-Joris-ten-Distel, under the impulse of the landed gentry who settled in the green belt around Bruges, where the present Great -Beernem is part of it. It is not uncommon for large areas of forest and farmlands to be bought by noble families after they were seized during the French Revolution. The so-called "Galgeveldkasteltje" (Galgeveld nr. 58) is an example of this.

The "Galgeveld Castle" was built between 1813 and 1829. The black and white photo shows the castle around 1907.

The color photo was taken around 1996 and shows the "small castle" as it has always been called by the people of Saint George. Another name is "Kasteel de Vijvers".
