Neuenstein Castle rises above the Saasen district of the Neuenstein community on a steep limestone cliff approx. 350 m above sea level. The castle, first mentioned in 1267, was built around the middle of the 13th century by Count Albert I von Wallenstein as Neuwallenstein. In 1318 the castle was besieged and destroyed.
The palace complex remained in ruins until 1357 and was rebuilt from 1357 by Simon von Wallenstein and replaced by the Hessian landgrave Otto the Elder. Sagittarius (1366) conquered. The floor plan of the main castle forms a regular square, which is dominated by the 28 m high tower, the so-called keep. The feudal and ownership structures of Neuenstein Castle were varied. With the death of the last Wallensteiner, the secret government councilor August Gottfried Freiherr von Wallenstein, the castle finally fell to the Hessians in 1745.
