Twelve figures of leading French sculptors of the 18th century are set up around the large fountain below the palace, in the "garden paterre" and in the center of the main avenue. The first figures, Mercury and Venus, were erected in 1750. They were created in 1748 by the French sculptor Jean Baptiste Pigalle. Frederick the Great got it from the French King Louis XV. given in return for valuable horses that he had received.
