According to legend, the devil's beech was planted by the devil himself.
He lay in wait for hikers and traders in its branches to play tricks on them. When they rested under the tree, he put them to sleep, emptied their baskets and backpacks and filled them with field stones. Sometimes he climbed into a backpack himself and then had the unsuspecting person carry him. The devil made life difficult for travelers until he was caught crawling into the backpack of a young boy. The boy tied up the sack and beat the devil until he promised never to be seen again. Since then, hikers have been able to enjoy the Rennsteig and the wonderful nature without having to worry about having the devil in their luggage. But maybe he's just better disguised today...
