    Nice lighthouse between Dahme and Kellenhusen. Can be approached either on a walk or a bike ride.

    The Dahmeshöved lighthouse stands on a coastal promontory about halfway between Fehmarn and Travemünde.

    The octagonal tower was built entirely from bricks in 1878 and 1879. It is 28.8 meters high, which means that the beacon is 33.7 meters above sea level.

    The neighboring smaller brick tower was built in 1939 to give the lighthouse keeper an opportunity to monitor the visibility.

    During the German-German division, the Dahmeshöved lighthouse had a special meaning for the GDR citizens, because it was a point of reference when escaping across the Baltic Sea as the so-called "light of freedom".

    Those who are more interested in the lighthouse can also visit it with an expert guide. The opening times - in the season from April to October - are: Sunday to Thursday from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. every half hour.

                      The old lighthouse has defied the sometimes harsh coastal climate for many decades. It stands on a coastal promontory halfway from Fehmarn to Travemünde and serves as an orientation light for shipping in the Mecklenburg and Lübeck Bays.

                      The 28.8 meter high, octagonal brick tower was built in 1878/79 on a ground level ("Höved") near what is today the Baltic Sea resort of Dahme, based on plans by Veitmeier from Berlin.
                      The height of the fire is an impressive 33.7 meters above sea level. The lighthouse received a petroleum incandescent lamp in 1890. The passing ships could see him from more than 14 nautical miles away, even under petroleum light.
                      During wartime it was used by air traffic control as an observation platform. The lighthouse has been shining with a 220 volt / 300 watt lamp and a replacement liquid gas lamp since 1925.

                      At the time of the German-German division, the lighthouse in Dahmeshöved was of particular importance. It served the GDR citizens as a point of orientation when escaping across the Baltic Sea as a so-called "light of freedom".
