This remarkable feat of 19th-century engineering, situated at approximately 11 meters above sea level, transformed the former tidal River Avon into a constant-level basin. In 1809, the Floating Harbour opened in Bristol, becoming a busy commercial port in the city center. Covering 80 acres of tidal river on the Avon, the area allowed incoming ships to remain afloat all the time when docked. Designed by civil engineer, William Jessop, the harbour was in commercial use until 1975. Today, you can visit the re-developed harbour and its unique shops and restaurants.

Watch out for the tram lines when crossing.

Normally lots to watch, with boats and the harbour side train which run in the summer.
