In Roman Cologne, on the northernmost side street in the direction of Rheinhafen, there was a luxurious city villa - the house with the Dionysian mosaic, now the site of the Roman-Germanic Museum. The basalt paving of this »Hafenstraße« in the outer area of the museum is the only accessible »Roman road« in the heart of a German metropolis. The heavy columnar basalt of the street was excavated in 1969 when the dome environment was redesigned. They have been moved a few meters offset in a new bed, but not as a curved dam, but for safety reasons as a flat surface. On the surfaces of the basalt stones the ancient signs of wear can be seen.
