It all began with the motorway bridge; about 30 million years ago, the sea flowed into the basin near Weinheim. At this point, there is a former beach slope, and researchers can identify the different sea levels using the bands. A sea cow (fossil - clear) has also been found here, and even impressions of ray burrows have been identified. During World War II, the caves were used to protect the population from air raids.
