The Schwänberg was first documented in about 821 and thus belongs to the oldest settlements in the Appenzellerland, relics of a late medieval manor house can be found in the Rutenkaminhaus.
In the first half of the 17th century, a celebrity residential district of Herisau was built in Schwänberg. On behalf of families who had become wealthy through trade, medicine and military service, several stately private homes were built. The "Old Town Hall", the pristine Rutenkaminhaus, the cozy economy Sternen with its more than 300 years old bread oven and the white house with the legendary tuff cellar belong to the interesting building stock and make the hamlet Schwänberg to the townscape of national importance.
Attractive hiking trails invite you on a trip into the surrounding area - the wild Wissbachschlucht, the ruin Ramsenburg or the covered wooden bridge from 1782.
