                                              The Veerse Gat was a tidal inlet in Zeeland, between Noord-Beveland and Walcheren. It was closed in 1961 by the Veerse Gatdam as part of the Delta Works. This made it the Veerse Meer. Until 1961, the Veerse Gat was the entrance to the (fishing) harbor of Veere. Since then, this port can only be reached via a lock in the Zandkreekdam and has lost its significance as a fishing port. After the closure, Jaap Fischer wrote the song Het Veerse Gat (1962). The first line of the chorus reads: The hole is closed, the harbor is for johoho, for johohohoker. In his song Fischer predicts that 'Fritz und Wilhelm' will now come 'fast', and that Veere will become a recreational town.
