North of Lübeck's town hall is the so-called Chancellery Building,
then called the Schriverie. It was built in 1485 in the Gothic style. Construction took five years.
In 1588 and 1614, the building was expanded as far as Mengstraße.
It was the seat of the notaries and town clerks. From 1277 to 1863, they maintained
the Lower Town Register, which today represents an important historical source.
Inside the Chancellery Building is the "Renaissance Hall" from 1612/1615,
the former "Commission Room" (courtroom) with rich paneling by Tönnies Evers.
The arcades of the basement, which were open until 1818, housed stalls where fur makers and shoemakers had their shops and workshops. At the beginning of the 19th century, the Chancellery Building housed, among other things, the passport and stamp office, the registry office with the state archives, and the beer tasting room.
