The only access to the castle via a drawbridge and a gate with a Gothic arch was from Burgstrasse to the left of the Wolfsturm, which Burgstrasse encounters today. Today's access via the outside staircase was only created during the restoration of the castle at the end of the fifties / beginning of the sixties. Today the castle is used for cultural purposes, such as exhibitions and concerts. A prerequisite for becoming a town in 1326 was the construction of a town fortification, which was completed in the 16th century. The wall was broken by gates in four places: the Brückor (Brückstraße), the Maartor (Aachener Straße), the Oerather Tor (Roermonder Straße) and the Cologne or Bellinghovener Tor. Remnants of the wall reminiscent of the Cologne Gate, which was lifted and renovated during extensive road construction work. Today it is in the pedestrian zone opposite the central bus stop called "Kölner Tor". The city wall was formerly reinforced by a series of watchtowers and windmill towers. The facade design of the parking deck on the east promenade, which lies in the course of the former wall ring, is reminiscent of these towers.
