It is a brick church with elements of the Romanesque, Gothic and late 18th century. The tower was built in the middle of the 13th century and is one of the oldest preserved parts of the church. Originally it was a defense or watchtower that was used to raise taxes from shipping on the Aller.

A small nave was added in the 13th century. On the north side next to the tower, a later walled-up portal of the Romanesque church has been preserved. In the course of the 14th century the nave was redesigned in a Gothic style. The wider polygonal choir was not added until 1780-1786. The church hall received a vault as a whole. The spire was renewed in the 1960s. On the foundation blocks of the tower (by the way - if you look closely - also on one of the photos) you can see furrows across the entire width of the tower. People used to sharpen their axes and knives here, as this was the only sandstone in the area. The holes, which can still be clearly seen today, come from the scaffolding that was and is necessary for the work on the tower.
