Theatrical life in Dessau has a long tradition. There was already a permanent theatre company in Dessau in 1794. The first venue was the Princely Riding School, the first theatre director was Friedrich Wilhelm Bossann. The Anhalt Philharmonic Orchestra was also founded during this time.

The first theatre building was built by Friedrich Wilhelm von Erdmannsdorff (Wörlitz Park) by 1798. When Duke Leopold III Friedrich Franz had the theatre closed in 1810 for financial reasons as a result of the war, the amateur project of the Societätstheater gained importance again for a short time.

After two fires in 1855 (rebuilt) and 1922, the Princely Riding School was once again the venue.

After three years of construction, the current building was completed in 1938 as the largest stage north of the Alps at the time, with 1250 seats. The architects were Friedrich Lipp (1882–1957) and Werry Roth (1885–1958). The opening took place in the presence of Adolf Hitler and Joseph Goebbels on May 29, 1938. The opera Der Freischütz was performed.

After being almost completely destroyed in one of the heavy air raids on Dessau on May 30, 1944, the theater was rebuilt and reopened in 1949 with Mozart's The Magic Flute under the direction of Willy Bodenstein (director from 1949 to 1968). In the period from 1945 onwards, the remaining theater staff found a temporary rehearsal and performance space and rehearsals began again in November 1945. The first performance of Beethoven's Fidelio took place in December. Willy Bodenstein was followed by the following directors and general directors:

    1968–1973: Karl Schneider

    1973–1983: Herbert Keller

    1983–1992: Peter Gogler

    1992–2009: Johannes Felsenstein

    2009–2015: André Bücker

In 1994, the theatre, which had previously been called the Dessau State Theatre, was given the name Anhaltisches Theater.

Due to massive cuts in state subsidies by the state government of Saxony-Anhalt in 2013, the theatre saw its continued existence as being at risk. Even by closing three departments, the savings targets could not be met.[1] General Director Bücker was a sharp critic of the cuts. His contract was not renewed by the city of Dessau-Roßlau beyond the 2014/2015 season.[2]

Johannes Weigand has been the general director of the Anhaltisches Theater since the 2015/2016 season. Weigand was the opera director of the Wuppertaler Bühnen until 2014.
