The Trinity Column, a plague column from the 18th century, is located in the middle of Linz's main square, which is one of the most beautiful squares in Austria.
The baroque landmark of Linz made of white Salzburg marble is 20 m high and was built between 1717 and 1723. The execution was in the hands of the Salzburg master stonemason Sebastian Stumpfegger based on a design by Antonio Beduzzi. On the three sides of the base of the column, three inscription panels with the imperial coat of arms, the state coat of arms and the coat of arms of the city of Linz represent the dedication by the emperor, the estates and the population of Linz. Exactly these three coat of arms stones, which also point in the respective direction - castle, country house, town hall - symbolize the earthly trinity. The column was erected by the emperor, the estates and the population in gratitude for their rescue from the danger of war (1704), fire (1712) and plague (1713). On the base are the statues of the plague saints, St. Sebastian and St. Charles Borromeo, as well as the patron saint of fire, St. Florian, appropriate. The large cloud column is decorated with jubilant angels and the shaft of the column is adorned with a statue of St. Maria Immaculata standing on a crescent moon. The crowning Trinity group is made of gilded copper.
