The sand lock was intended to prevent floodwaters flowing in from the North Sea from flowing unhindered into the Sorge. This protected the lowlands in the upper concern area from flooding. An information board on the bicycle bridge provides detailed information about the development and importance of the lock and pumping station. Also interesting is that the sand sluice played a crucial role in the introduction and spread of the potato in 1763.
