      The largest island in the Schaalsee is Kampenwerder, a popular destination. Only a few people live there between fields and a wooded shoreline. Visitors access the island via a narrow causeway from the community of Lassahn on the eastern shore of the lake. The path leads across the neighboring Stintenburg Island with the historic bridge house, where border soldiers were stationed in GDR times. Today the renovated half-timbered house houses a restaurant. Both islands belong to the lands of the von Bernstorff family, who also live in the manor house on Stintenburg Island.
