    The Rhine Falls (Alemannic/Swiss German: Rhyfall [ˈriːfalː], Italian: Cascate del Reno, French: Chutes du Rhin, Romansh: Cascada dal Rain) is one of the most powerful waterfalls in Europe, with a height of 23 meters and a width of 150 meters. It is located in Switzerland, within the municipalities of Neuhausen am Rheinfall in the canton of Schaffhausen (right bank) and Laufen-Uhwiesen in the canton of Zurich (left bank), about four kilometers southwest of the city of Schaffhausen.

    The Rhine Falls, along with the equally high Sarpsfossen in Norway and the twice as high Dettifoss in Iceland, are among the three largest waterfalls in Europe. Sarpsfossen has a higher average flow of 577 m³/s, but is completely obstructed by hydroelectric power plants. Dettifoss carries only about half as much water, but is the only one of the three falls that remains completely untouched.

    On its journey from Lake Constance to Basel, the High Rhine encounters numerous resistant rock formations that narrow the riverbed, forcing the river to overcome these obstacles in rapids and a waterfall known as the Rhine Falls. The Rhine Falls were formerly also called the Great Laufen, to distinguish them from the former Little Laufen near Laufenburg and the still-existing Middle Laufen near Ettikon.

    The Rhine Falls are 23 meters high and 150 meters wide. The plunge pool at the base of the falls is 13 meters deep. At average Rhine flow, 373 cubic meters of water per second cascade over the rocks at the Rhine Falls (average summer flow: approximately 600 m³/s). The highest flow rate was recorded in 1965 at 1250 cubic meters per second, and the lowest in 1921 at 95 cubic meters per second. The flow rate was similarly low in 1880, 1913, and 1953.

    Fish cannot swim upstream over the Rhine Falls, except for eels. Eels slither sideways (outside the riverbed, on land) up the rocks.
