          The Buchenbach rises on the northern edge of the Berglen, the southwestern part of the Swabian-Franconian Forest. Its headwaters are on the ridge between the communities of Berglen and Rudersberg south of the hamlet of Königsbronnhof. It runs westwards down into the valley through a blade and crosses several districts of the municipality of Berglen in a southerly direction, namely Rettersburg and Oppelsbohm. The Buchenbachtal is the central valley of the Berglen, which are grouped around it in a horseshoe shape; the Buchenbach, which receives numerous small watercourses from the eastern and western slopes, drains most of the mountain landscape.

          After about 7 km, near the district of Erlenhof, the Buchenbach gives way in a sharp bend to the north-west in front of the Buocherhöhe and largely stays in this direction up to the mouth. At Birkmannsweiler it leaves the Berglen and enters the more open landscape of the Neckar basin. In Winnenden it borders the old town in the northeast. After the next village, Leutenbach, the Buchenbach reaches the lower-lying layers of the shell limestone and begins to dig its way into an ever-deeper valley. The last places on the creek are the Weiler zum Stein district in Leuvenbach and the individual settlement of Steinächle, which already belongs to the district of Ludwigsburg.

          At Steinächle, the penultimate, rather small road also crosses the stream, whose narrow valley then deepens over the last five kilometers and is no longer suitable for settlements or agricultural use. This section of the valley is under nature protection (see below). Finally, after about 23 km, the Buchenbach flows into the Murr between Burgstall and Kirchberg; shortly before it is spanned by the Backnang–Ludwigsburg railway line and a final road crosses it.
