As Schleimünde (Danish Sliminde) today's pilot island (Danish: Lodsø) is called, which separates the loop from the Baltic Sea. Schleimünde is the location of a lighthouse and a small port for pleasure boats. It belongs to the district of Schleswig-Flensburg.

The peninsula is 112 hectares and barely five meters higher than the water level. In storm surges, the island is sometimes completely submerged. The 14.3 meter high lighthouse (dating from 1871) at the south end of the island leads to a dam. A little farther north, the pilot's house is three meters above the water. The pilot house is now used as a conference center for seminars. At the port for pleasure boats, there is a small restaurant, "the Giftbude". Pilots and the lighthouse keeper are no longer living on the island. The fire is remotely controlled and monitored from Lübeck-Travemünde. The largest part of the peninsula today is the nature reserve Schleimündung, which is cared for by the association Jordsand by a bird conservationist.

On 20 September 2008, the previously federally owned peninsula was auctioned in a public land auction by the Lighthouse Foundation, a foundation based in Hamburg.
