    Gateway to the South.
    The Anhalter Bahnhof passenger station was a place of longing for Berliners around 1900. The first train bound for the Duchy of Anhalt departed from here, as did the “Riviera Express.” After the station was demolished (1959–61), the only thing left of Franz Schwechten’s monument of urban railway architecture was the portico of the main building. Electric arc lamps by Siemens made the old entrance hall so bright that, as one contemporary witness raved, “you could read the tiniest print.” An important safety factor for railroads is the ability to transmit information about the progress of trains and breakdowns. The telegraph technology developed by Siemens came right on cue. Connecting trains with telegraph lines was one of Siemens’ first achievements.

      It used to be the largest train station in Berlin, and is even said to be one of the most beautiful. Ultimately, it suffered from the division of Berlin.
      Located right on a main road and only a little bit of it was visible...unfortunately not much more.

        The Anhalter station was built in the years 1839 to 1841 as terminus of the Saxon (later Berlin-Anhalt) railway between Halleschem and Potsdamer Tor. Until its heavy war damage in 1945, the Anhalter station was a heavily frequented hub of metropolitan life in the sphere of influence of Potsdamer Platz. In the course of the extension and elevation of the station area 1876 to 1880, the original building was replaced by a new building to plans by Franz Schwechten, whose ruins can be seen today.
