The Wümme
The Wümme flows through the northern Lower Saxony and Bremen. The water has almost continuously the quality class II: Moderate load. This makes the Wümme one of the cleanest rivers in northern Germany.
The source of the Wümme lies in the highest part of the Lüneburg Heath in the nature reserve Lüneburger Heide south of Niederhaverbeck. Just a few kilometers from the source also springs the Este, which, however, flows into the Elbe. From the Wilseder Berg comes as the largest spring stream the Haverbeeke, which combines 1.5 km west of Niederhaverbeck with the Wümme. Since the Haverbeeke at the confluence is both longer and more water-rich than the Wümme, not actually the Haverbeeke flows into the Wümme, but conversely the Wümme in the Haverbeeke or is the Haverbeeke the actual spring stream of the Wümme. The Wümme flows from there first through natural lowlands. It then flows through Scheeßel and Rotenburg, to whose development once also the mills on the Wümme contributed.
