The name of the village itself, as local residents explain, comes from the word "church", which in the old days was pronounced as "cherkva". In the 17th century, the village of Cherkutino was a palace estate and belonged to that very ancient princely, and then royal family of the Romanovs. In the 18th century, Cherkutino began to belong to the Saltykov family, who built an estate here. The Saltykov estate is one of the earliest rural noble estates of the European type in the Vladimir region. It was built in the 1730s. The estate as a whole was of a representative nature. The estate complex itself was located on a small hill, from where beautiful views of the natural landscape opened up. The road (now the Vladimir-Alexandrov road) played the role of a dividing line between the southern part of the estate and the northern part, where the outbuildings were located. The dividing line - the road also served as a kind of dam, which partially blocked the bed of the Tungora River, as a result of which a pond was formed. There were three such dams, they in turn formed a whole cascade of ponds in the form of a staircase, starting from the road and ending at the borders of the estate church.
In the center of the estate in 1801-1802, the Nativity of the Mother of God Church was built with a high bell tower, which in height was among the five tallest bell towers in the Vladimir province. The bell tower at the Nativity Church in the village of Cherkutino was built at the expense of Nikolai Ivanovich Saltykov and was his special pride. The Saltykov family has been known since the 13th century, the branches of his dynasty enjoyed the favor of all the monarchs ruling in Russia, and the Saltykov landownership in the Vladimir region (Cherkutino, Snegirevo, Babaevo, etc.) has been known for two centuries.
