In the Ivanovo district, near the village of Kholuy, Yuzhsky district, there is an ancient monastery complex, the Borkovskaya Nikolaevskaya Pustyn. The monastery was founded on the left bank of the Teza River in 1650 by the son of Prince Dmitry Pozharsky, Ivan, in memory of his father's stop with his retinue during the liberation campaign against Moscow in 1612. According to legend, Prince Dmitry Pozharsky, leading an army to free Moscow from the Polish invaders, stopped in a place called Borok and vowed to build a monastery in the name of St. Nicholas in case of victory over the enemy. The monastery, built of wood, was soon destroyed by fire and closed. Almost a hundred years passed and, at the request and expense of Bishop Methodius of Astrakhan, a native of the village of Kholuy, the monastery was revived and rebuilt in 1741. At the same time, the Trinity Cathedral (1744) and the winter Kazan Church (1765) were built.
