Located along the D74 road linking Combles to Lesboeufs, the village of Morval lies in an enclave within the Pas-de-Calais department. During the Battle of the Somme, it was captured by the British, along with Lesboeufs, on September 25, 1916. This double capture would lead to the capture of Combles the following day, a key element in the German defensive system.
During the German offensive of March 1918, Morval was lost on the 24th, only to be definitively recaptured on September 1 after fierce fighting. The necropolis, located west of the village, accessible by a path, contains the bodies of some fifty British and one German killed between August 26 and September 6, 1918.
