      The island is a non-profit museum complex with an independent café for commercial use. The museum wants to draw attention to the history of the Fehn. We can find here various historical buildings such as a forge, a gang saw, showrooms and more. Since 1776, in addition to the timber trade, a sawmill and bark mill, a shipyard and self-sufficiency farming have developed on the island. Today the island is a lively place of cultural research, creation and enjoyment. In winter, the surrounding lowlands were regularly flooded. Only the island, a heaped-up elevation, stood out as an island. This gave the property its name. As early as 1633, the oldest East Frisian fen settlement, later known as Groote Veen (Großefehn), developed along the canal that was driven from the Fehntjer Tief into the high moor. It was a joint venture of Emden merchants for peat extraction and marketing.
