At the end of the 16th century the fortress lost its defensive function (the fortress of Palmanova had been built) and became a lookout point on the eastern borders of the Republic. This did not prevent the sacking of the city and the fortress itself by the Usocchi in 1615. The Venetian stable garrison stayed there until 1797, the year of the fall of the Venetian Republic by Napoleon. Abandoned for a very long time, it suffered the offenses of the First World War; in the years between 1950 and 1955 it was restored by the Superintendency of Monuments and since 1968 it has been entrusted to the care of the Monfalconese Speleological Group "Amici del Fante" which, two years later, inaugurated a paleontological museum, later transferred to the center of the city and replaced by the current speleological museum.

The Karst of Monfalcone suffered deep wounds during the 20th century: the First World War, the Cold War, military servitudes, the border between Eastern Europe and the West (the Iron Curtain), the A4 motorway. Today, however, it represents an area of great historical value (the castles, the Rocca di Monfalcone, the trenches, the war caves, the "works" of the arresting infantry), naturalistic value (the karst moor, the woods and the karst scrub , the reforestation pine forests, the Mediterranean and Balkan flora) and geological (the epigean and underground karst phenomena, the system of karst lakes of Pietrarossa and Doberdò).
Traveling along the karst hills behind Monfalcone it is possible to visit the Great War Theme Park. It was opened to the public in 2005 and covers an area of approximately 4 km2. It offers visitors three different areas to discover the places where various battles took place between June 1915 and May 1917. Also interesting is the presence of the hillforts whose history dates back to ancient times. There are five fortified villages dating back to the Bronze Age, witnesses of a settled pastoral society: Gradiscata, Forcate, Rocca, Golas and Moschenizza. Located at an altitude of 60 m above sea level, they are in visual communication with each other.
The karst plateau that extends between the town of Doberdò, the lake of the same name and the peaks of the Cosici and Debeli mountains was used as a training area for tanks during the years of the Cold War. Even today, various defensive works (fortifications, observatories, etc.) are still present here and there.
Lake Doberdò is one of the few examples of a karst lake in Europe. The flows of the Vipacco and Isonzo rivers influence the level of its waters fed through the underground system of the Gorizia Karst. Other rare examples of karst wetland systems are Lake Pietrarossa and the Sablici swamp.
The ring proposed here, almost entirely off-road (there are only two km of asphalt), allows you to "interact" with all these elements.
