The Cathedral of the Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Gospić became a Catholic cathedral church on May 25, 2000, with the establishment of the Gospić-Senj diocese.

Originally a parish church, today's Cathedral was built between 1781 and 1783 in baroque classicism and is an example of a typical Krajina church of the 18th century.

During the Homeland War, the church was the target of attacks, and on September 15, 1991, it was set on fire. On that occasion, the roof and cap of the belfry burned down with the interior, and the bells were melted, while the interior of the Cathedral was damaged by arson. The renovation began during the Homeland War, before Christmas 1992, it was covered. It was largely completed by July 22, 1999.
