    Saulburg Castle

The core of the complex, built on a rocky outcrop jutting out to the east, dates back to the 12th century and is a conglomerate of buildings from the 12th to the 18th century.

The first documented mention of a "Heinrich de Sulperge" was in the tradition codex of Windberg Monastery. From the 12th to the 14th century, the Saulbergers are documented as lords of Saulburg. From 1332 to 1482, the Dukes of Bavaria were lords of Saulburg. From 1508 to 1520, Heinrich, Christoph and Ludwig, the Westendorfers of Saulburg, were named, then Bernhard.

In 1555, the castle and manor passed to the Ettlingers. They were lords of Saulburg until 1638. Since Jörg Ettlinger's two marriages had remained childless, an inheritance dispute arose between 1590 and 1594. In 1609, Andreas Ettlinger died heavily in debt. From 1610 to 1614, the manor was sold to the diocese of Regensburg. After further disputes between heirs and creditors, Hans Christoph von Ettling (1615-1638) received the manor by a ruling of the government in Straubing. From 1638 to 1642, the city of Straubing was pledged to the manor of Saulburg before it was bought at auction by Pankraz von Pürching. In 1664, Saulburg fell to Adolf von Auer, Electoral Chamberlain and Prince-Bishop's caretaker of Werdenfels. The Auers retained ownership until around 1750. Major General Josef Albert Matern von Septfontaines followed as the owners of the manor of Saulburg, and from 1780, Franz Josef von Magerl, Imperial Baron of Wegleiten. In 1834, Ludwig von Krapp, the domain director of Thurn and Taxis, bought the castle and estate of Saulburg. In 1838, he "destroyed" the castle estate. The brewery was leased to the miller Josef Widmann of Aufroth and to the baker of Kirchroth, and the forest was acquired by Prince von Thurn and Taxis.
In 1838, Josef Widmann, the tenant of the brewery, bought the castle estate and brewery, which meant that the castle became bourgeois property. The brewery was closed in 1936. The indebted property was then transferred to the Bavarian Settlement Bank, from which the son of the same name, Josef Widmann, who had returned from the Second World War, bought back the property, which had been reduced by 60 acres.
In 1967, Wolfgang von Schmieder bought part of the castle complex from Josef Widmann, and in October 1982 the remaining part. In 1982, the castle complex was bought by Wolfgang Graf von Strachwitz. The new owner renovated the entire castle complex.

      Castle Chapel of St. Ägidius

The new Catholic castle chapel of St. Ägidius is a Rococo building with Tuscan pilasters by the architect Johann Michael Fischer and was commissioned by the lord of the manor, Joseph Albert von Matern, in 1754. The recessed choir has a rectangular bay and a semicircular end. The windows have a moderately dynamic outline and end with a curved arch. A small roof turret crowns the chapel.
The two epitaphs of the founding couple Joseph Albert Matern von Septfontaine, Lord of Saulburg, Electorate of Bavaria's Major General of the Cavalry and Commander of the Forest Districts, and his wife Johanna Theodora von Matern de Septfontaine zu und auf Saulburg,
née Countess von Leiblfing auf Rhain und Laberweinting, are in the choir of the chapel.
