Zierikzee ´Nobelpoort´
Zierikzee is the only city in the Netherlands that has the great privilege of having three of its medieval gates, which have remained virtually unchanged since the 16th century. Kampen also has three gates, but they have been heavily renovated in later times. They are reminders of times long gone when the city had to defend itself against the enemy.
Of these three gates, the Nobel Gate, which stands on the north side of the city, is the oldest. This can be deduced from the use of Tournai stone on the lower part and the masbling of bricks of the same part in the so-called Flemish bandage. There is no alternation of stone layers in the lengthwise direction of the wall. But on the other hand an alternation of stones in the lengthwise and depth direction in each wall layer.

In the Nobelpoort the medieval character is best preserved. Only the facade between the two towers on the outside has been changed.

The gate dates from the first quarter of the 14th century. After the heavy siege by the Flemish in 1304, the defenses were drastically improved. Part of this was the construction of this gate. The name of the builder of this gate is unknown. Unfortunately, this is no longer traced, because in 1811 the archive documents were sold as waste paper by the mayor of the time.

Like the Zuidhavenpoort, the Nobel Gate is high. It offered defenders the opportunity to spy on their attackers from the heights.
It is still the time of bows and arrows.
When the cannons could exert their devastating influence, they were no longer hoisted up by such high gates.

THE NAME OF COUNTRIP
How the Nobel Gate got its name is uncertain.
Nobel means noble, is the name of a coin, but also of a medieval name.

In 1303 a Ghise Nobelsone lived in the Bridorpe castle in Brouwershaven.
The Nobel Gate may have given it its name. A popular tradition tells that the building was founded by two noble ladies, Anna and Maria. Because one of them was crooked, the builders built one of the two towers with a slight bend.
