Rubens is not depicted as an artist. He proudly overlooks the Groenplaats and the cathedral. He wears a sword around his waist and in his right hand he holds his wide-brimmed hat. As if to greet some acquaintance or to present himself to one of the many rulers he has met during his diplomatic career. The Peter Paul Rubens Statue is a larger than life bronze figure of the Flemish Baroque painter Peter Paul Rubens (1577-1640), created by the sculptor Guillaume Geefs and located on the Groenplaats in front of the Cathedral of Our Lady in Antwerp. Another Rubens statue is in Vienna.

1840. Antwerp wanted to commemorate the bicentenary of Rubens' death with a statue. But soon problems arose. The public fundraising had not raised enough, so there was no bronze statue. It was therefore opted for a plaster copy of what was to become the real statue. When he left the studio of sculptor Guillaume 'Willem' Geefs (1805-1883), however, things fell off the bandwagon. Fortunately there was a second plaster copy.

The intention was to place the statue on August 15, 1840 at the start of the Rubens celebrations. Due to numerous circumstances, the plaster Rubens was not placed until August 25, 1840. Not on Groenplaats, but on Sint-Walburgisplein, which has since disappeared. There Rubens could look out over the Scheldt.

In 1843 the time had come: the bronze statue was ready. It was placed on 9 August on the Groenplaats, right on the spot where the cemetery crucifix had stood until 1739. But it almost went wrong again. When the cart on which the statue stood drove onto the Groenplaats, the colossus fell through the wheels. The statue was damaged as a result, but could be repaired and installed the same year.
