The imposing Palazzo Caprilli is located on the seafront of Livorno, at the intersection of Viale Italia and Via dei Funaioli.
It was built in the mid-19th century on behalf of Domenico Caprilli who divided it into furnished apartments to rent in the summer season. In 1870 the palace was owned by Enrico and Olinto Caprilli who sold part of it to the Rignano family who over time acquired it completely.
The structure of the building, which is large but not heavy, extends in length for a hundred meters, facing the gardens of the Mascagni terrace; in height it is divided into three parts separated by showy string courses: on the ground floor covered with smooth ashlar, there are various vaulted doors that lead to the internal homes or commercial premises; the middle part actually consists of two floors, both characterized by a regular row of large windows each delimited by pilasters or Corinthian columns as high as the two floors together; in the center of the facade a long balcony with small columns protrudes, two other smaller ones on the sides; the upper part finally presents a series of doors and windows enclosed by a simpler continuous wrought iron railing. All this, together with a bright color, gilded by the sun's rays especially at sunset, gives elegance and lightness to the building.

The palace is also linked to the name of Federico Caprilli (1868-1907) from Livorno, a cavalry officer who developed the "Natural Equitation System", a method that obtained the best results in horse riding by leading the rider to follow the horse's movements rather than rigidly imposing them. Caprilli's system was so successful that it soon became the official standard still in use in equestrian sports. However, it did not prevent Federico Caprilli from dying at a young age due to a trivial fall from a horse. A plaque on the palace of the same name commemorates Caprilli and the technique he invented, while the city's hippodrome is dedicated to Caprilli.
